NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE COVER REVIEW

I like all these covers because they really caught my attention. The first one looks like if a little village was just raided because of the smoke that is visible. The second one reminds me of the titanic even if I’ve never watched the movie and the third one reminds me of the game Uncharted: A Thief’s End, the building looks old and that stands out to me.

ARTICLE READ AND WRITE: SILHOUETTE

A silhouette picture can really create dramatic effect. It adds glamour and drama to a picture but making a silhouette picture isn’t always easy. The photographer must learn to deviate from the rules generally followed when taking a normally- lit picture by adjusting for a different relationship between light and subject. When taking the picture, it must be easy to recognize what is happening and the storyline behind the figures and the position they’re in.

PAINTING WITH LIGHT

I think the photographer achieved the result of catching my eye because of the mirroring of her on the water. It’s both eye catching and creative, though I wonder how they got her to get the lighting to swerve behind her like that. The background really adds emotion; it sets the mood of the picture and to me that mood is a feeling of relaxed and calmness. She’s under the bright moon in water with even a silhouette like picture in front of the lighting.

CULTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY: READ AND RESPOND

The article is about how finding what kind of photography you really find interest in shooting, when someone asks you what kind of photography you like shooting. Sometimes it won’t sound right saying the thing that comes directly out of your mouth. I learned that the term ”cultural photography” isn’t a thing and that googling it you’ll find nothing specifically on it.  There were ‘culture’ categories in photo contests – for photographers who spent most of their time with tribal culture but the genre just did not seem to be out there. Google the term and see what you find. There is plenty of culture that exists within cities and densely populated places.

Most cultures stopped putting on traditional dresses/clothes because photographers like to take pictures but the reality is that most people can be traditional without having to wear traditional clothes. As Chief Jimmy of the Naihne tribe in Tanna once said to me, “We have traditional dress, but we don’t wear it all the time, and we’ve stopped putting it on for photographers who show up wanting to see what ‘traditional culture’ looks like.  Most of the time I just wear a t-shirt and this jacket.  It is more practical.”

Cultural anthropology is a branch of anthropology focused on the study of cultural variation among humans and is in contrast to social anthropology which perceives cultural variation as a subset of the anthropological constant. A variety of methods are part of anthropological methodology, including participant observation (often called fieldwork because it involves the anthropologist spending an extended period of time at the research location), interviews, and surveys.
